For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Ford Ranger Raptor have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Honda Ridgeline doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The Ranger Raptor has standard Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Ridgeline doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Ranger Raptor has a standard Reverse Brake Assist that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Ridgeline doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Ranger Raptor’s standard Trail Control allows you to creep down safely. The Ridgeline doesn’t offer Trail Control.

The Ranger Raptor has a standard 360-Degree Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Ridgeline only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Ranger Raptor’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Ridgeline doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Ranger Raptor and the Ridgeline have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

The Ford Ranger Raptor weighs 821 to 905 pounds more than the Honda Ridgeline. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Ford Ranger Raptor is safer than the Honda Ridgeline:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Ford Ranger Raptor is safer than the Honda Ridgeline:

Warranty

There are almost 3 times as many Ford dealers as there are Honda dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Ranger Raptor’s warranty.

Reliability

The Ford Ranger Raptor’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the Ridgeline’s engine uses an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Ranger Raptor has a standard 800-amp battery. The Ridgeline’s 650-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Honda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford above average in initial quality. With 2 more problems per 100 vehicles, Honda is rated lower.

Engine

The Ranger Raptor’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 125 more horsepower (405 vs. 280) and 168 lbs.-ft. more torque (430 vs. 262) than the Ridgeline’s 3.5 SOHC V6.

As tested in Car and Driver the Ford Ranger Raptor is faster than the Honda Ridgeline:

Fuel Economy and Range

The Ranger Raptor has almost a gallon more fuel capacity than the Ridgeline (20.3 vs. 19.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Transmission

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Ford Ranger Raptor, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a nine-speed automatic is available for the Ridgeline.

Brakes and Stopping

The Ranger Raptor’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Ridgeline are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Ranger Raptor has larger tires than the Ridgeline (285/70R17 vs. 245/60R18).

The Ford Ranger Raptor’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Honda Ridgeline only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Ranger Raptor has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your work or a trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Ridgeline; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

The Ranger Raptor has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Ridgeline’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ranger Raptor’s wheelbase is 3.5 inches longer than on the Ridgeline (128.7 inches vs. 125.2 inches).

Passenger Space

The Ranger Raptor has .9 inches more front headroom and 2.3 inches more front legroom than the Ridgeline.

Cargo Capacity

The Ranger Raptor has a much larger cargo box than the Ridgeline shortbed (43.5 vs. 33.9 cubic feet).

The Ford Ranger Raptor has a standard tailgate assist feature, which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. The Honda Ridgeline doesn’t offer a tailgate assist.

The Ford Ranger Raptor has a standard Integrated Box Side Step, which allows for much easier access to the cargo area. The Honda Ridgeline doesn’t offer a rear cargo step.

Towing

The Ranger Raptor’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Ridgeline’s (5510 vs. 5000 pounds).

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Ranger Raptor is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Ridgeline. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because there are no rear spark plugs and the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The Ranger Raptor’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Ridgeline does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Ranger Raptor’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Ridgeline’s parking brake has to be released manually.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Ranger Raptor’s available exterior PIN entry system. The Ridgeline doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system.

The Ranger Raptor’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Ridgeline’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Ranger Raptor’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Honda only offers heated mirrors on the Ridgeline RTL/TrailSport/Black Edition.

The Ranger Raptor’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Ridgeline’s power mirror controls are on the dash where they are possibly hidden by the steering wheel and are awkward to manipulate.

Both the Ford Ranger Raptor and Honda Ridgeline offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The Ranger Raptor features standard power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Ridgeline’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

The Ranger Raptor has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the Ridgeline TrailSport/Black Edition.

The Ford Ranger Raptor has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the driver’s visor. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Homelink® is only available on the Ridgeline RTL/TrailSport/Black Edition.

The Ranger Raptor’s Active Park Assist 2.0 can parallel park by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Ridgeline doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

The Ranger Raptor was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2025. The Ridgeline hasn’t been picked since 2019.

The Ford Ranger outsold the Honda Ridgeline by 1175 units during 2024.
